About Us

Patty and I developed this website to help raise awareness of butterflies and their widespread habitat loss and to inspire people to create butterfly gardens.

We encourage preserving natural areas, avoiding pesticides and, when possible, using native plants, trees and shrubs. We are advocates of sustainable gardening practices like composting, rain barrels and rain gardens.

Adding gardens and natural areas around our homes not only supports butterflies throughout their lifecycle but encourages biodiversity.

Patty and I are not lepidopterists, entomologists, or biologists. We consider ourselves ‘citizen scientists’ interested in learning all we can about the natural world.

We rely on our friend, Regina, and others to provide the scientific expertise so our site is as accurate and informative as possible. We welcome the input of all our visitors as well.

We hope this website provides the information, resources and, above all, the inspiration you need to grow your own Gardens With Wings!

Happy Butterfly Gardening,
Fred Miller & Patty Bigner

Regina M. Cutter Edwards - Entomologist

Through my years at Purdue University and Northern Kentucky University, I found a love for teaching people about insects. I have been involved in projects such as:

  • Growth development in cockroaches
  • Parasitoid wasps
  • Identification of forensically important flies
  • Butterflies in captivity

I began collecting insects for 4-H when I was 9 years old (more than 22 years ago) and found my lifetime hobby and career. Watching nature ‘do its thing’ was always exciting and knowing that it was all happening for a reason was just as amazing.

I am the Entomologist at Krohn Conservatory’s annual Butterfly Show in Cincinnati, Ohio for three months out of the year. The remaining part of the year I work as an independent insect consultant and I am also a stay-at-home Mom who is actively involved within the community. I look forward to assisting in any way I can and to learn as much as I can from the experiences of our readers!
