Common Ringlet (Coenonympha tullia)

This unique butterfly has extremely varying wing colors and patterns. The color can range from a dark orange-brown to pale cream. Some look orange with white scales and some have eyespots while some have no eyespots. There are thought to be several different subspecies, but all have color variations even within localities. They are not very strong fliers but are fun to watch as they bounce through moist grassy areas.

Subfamily: Satyrs and Wood-Nymph (Satyrinae)

Average Wingspan: 1" - 1 3/4"

Habitat: Open areas, meadows, pastures, fields
