Parts of a Butterfly

Butterflies belong to the insect order, lepidoptera, which means “scale wing” from the Greek words, ‘lepis’ (scale) and ‘ptera’ (wing).

These many scales that cover the butterfly’s wings create the striking colors and patterns, as seen in this Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.
