Look for caterpillars on the underside of leaves of their host plants out of the way of predators. Some will hide during the day in shelters of leaves and grass and only feed at night.
They are fascinating to watch as they feed on their host plant. There may not be much left of the plant by the time they leave so if you want to maintain the beauty of your garden, you can plant the host plants off to the side.
It usually takes 10 to 14 days for a caterpillar to reach maturity. They will then leave the host plant in search of the ideal spot to transform into a chrysalis - a pile of wood, a branch of a nearby bush or a garden fence. A chrysalis could be anywhere in or near your garden so look carefully.
If you have a caterpillar photo you’d like us to use on our site, send it to us. If we use your photo, we’ll list your name in the credits on the page with the details about that butterfly. How to submit photos
